I was going to write a whole post about Christians and Christmas and Jesus. But we all know that story. It isn't new. It's American.
And besides, Santa came!
Merry Christmas To All And To All A Good Night!

Festival Of Lights
Happy Hanukkah!
Tonight begins the first night in the 8 night celebration of the Jewish holiday, Hanukkah. And just what is Hanukkah?
Well, it is a Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. There was a revolt and when they took back the temple and purified it, there was only enough sacred oil to burn for one day. But a miracle occurred and the oil lasted 8 whole days.
And so Jewish families celebrate by lighting a menorah, which holds eight candles, one lit each night from right to left. And they eat food fried in oil.
And while we are not a Jewish family, obviously, we celebrate right along with them. So we will light our nightly candle and make potato pancakes and spin our dreidels.
(It sounds almost pagan… candles, food, prayers…. Just saying. Focus on the sames.)
Anyway, to me it isn’t Hanukkah until I hear this…
Okay, so not very religious but it always makes me laugh.
(On another side note… Santa comes tonight. Reminds me of a certain Holly King. This one looks like my tree topper.)
Blessed be!

On The Wild Hunt
Blessing Of The Holly King!
A happy yule to all of you. Today is the shortest day of the year and therefore the longest night. Tonight we celebrate the winter solstice, the first day of winter. This is also the last seasonal celebration of the year. Or the first if that is how you roll. Yule is right at the North point in the seasonal wheel.
Just a fun fact, did you know Stonehenge was built by ancient Pagan worshipers to align with the winter and summer Solstices?
Anyway, the Yule is a time for letting go, sacrifice and forgiveness. It is a time of peace, rest and reflection.
Now is the time we celebrate the Holly King, Odin, and the return of the Sun. In Asatru traditions it kicks off a 12 day celebration.
For me, tonight I celebrated the return of longer days and shorter nights. The promise of warm weather again. I made a feast with a delicious ham. Lots of rolls for my husband. We made an alter for the Holly King, complete with a holly and ever green wreath and candles, frankincense and myrrh incense, and an offering of delicious treats made by my aunt. We started a yule fire at dusk and burned it until midnight. We had a nice peaceful evening of reflection.
You know I sat here for a long time thinking about what to write on this Yule. What I could write about the meanings and how I could go on and on about all the “Christmas Traditions” are really Pagan traditions, but you know what…
Why not share the spirit? If Christians want to burn the Yule log to honor Jesus, go for it.
There is going to be times ahead where differences are going be used against us to divide us.
To that I say no.
To that I say a Merry Yuletide To All.
AND I MEAN ALL!
Blessed be.

On A Cold Night
Sometimes your best laid plans don’t always pan out. Sometimes what the Gods deliver is better than your plan.
Tonight we honor the full moon. This one is called the Cold Moon or the Long Night’s Moon. Both of those names are apt as for the fact that they happen around the winter solstice and the coldest and darkest time of the year.
Today I went to Disneyland and honored the God and Goddess by spending the time with my family. We walked around and had a great time as always. (FYI… I read somewhere that Walt Disney was Pagan. His family came from Ireland, so perhaps Celtic.) In the park they had booths set up to try holiday foods of other cultures. We tried a curry dish from India, a lamb dish from the Middle East and kugel from the Jewish booth. (The curry was my favorite.)
Since I knew we had planned to go to Disneyland today, I had planned to have an esbat last night by myself.
Planned to.
But then…
Some very nice person made a coconut cake for a friend. And that friend was having a bad day and the cake sure lifted her. Then she called me and asked if I wanted to share in this cake. And I told her since she is sharing her cake with me; I will share my dinner with her. (It was tacos and pozole.)
So instead of an esbat service for one, I held an impromptu, informal service for several. We ate a fabulous meal. I taught a younger witch (13) about runes. She and I did a candle spell together for good luck. She told me about her first deck of tarot cards. She admired things on my alter and I gave her stuff to set up her own at home. (Much like mine and her mother.) I gave her a candle and some incense and an incense holder. I even lent her a book to study and gave her a new blank book to write in.
Before I go on… let me tell you about that blank book.
Earlier this month I received a box of items from a subscription service I subscribe to. Inside the box was this blank book. It has a design on it from the new movie “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them”. (Yes, I am a huge Harry Potter nut.) When I pulled it out of the box, my husband asked me what I was going to do with yet another blank book. I immediately told him I was going to give it to the before mentioned 13 year old. I told him she would need it. For what purpose and when, I did not know, but she would need it.
And she did. Last night. The God and Goddess know what they are doing.
Anyway, she and I read runes and talked. Then we enjoyed an informal communion. We used the coconut cake as it was already a blessing.
After they left, her mother sent me this picture of the alter she went home and set up.
I love it.
See…
I wrote this post for these reasons…
1. Being Pagan is a perfectly normal part of life.
2. The God and Goddess know what is best for us.
3. Magick is everywhere, you just have to look for it.
Blessed be.

The Witches Witch
On November 30 we celebrate the festival of Hecate Trivia.
Not trivia like the game, but trivia like the place where three roads meet.
Hecate is a Thracian, pre-Olympian Greek goddess. She began her goddess reign as a goddess similar to Brigid or Diana. A goddess of fertility, childbirth, menstruation and puberty. She was born during the darkest of the moon.
In the story of Persephone, Hecate is the keeper of the key to the Underworld. She kept Persephone company during her time there.
However over the years she moved on. She changed from a goddess of women to the goddess of change, witchcraft, magic, life, death, crossroads, and psychic abilities. She is a dark witch. She is connected to the spirit world, ghosts and the dark of the moon.
She is the triple goddess.
Birth Life Death
Full New Dark Moons
Past Present Future
Earth Heaven Underworld
Earth Air Fire
She is the goddess of the witches. The goddess of magic. Celebrate. You have come to the crossroads. Give a nod to Hecate. She will always be there to help you on the right path.
Blessed be.

The Sun Will Come Out
Another new moon is upon us. And in the spirit of Thanksgiving, we celebrated Thanksgiving again. It was a great night I cooked a turkey and family and some friends came over. We celebrated. My daughter made a pumpkin pie from scratch. From an actual pumpkin.
I made gifts for all of our guests.
Orange pomanders!
A pomander is just a ball of fragrance.
I got the idea from the book “The Magical Year” by Danu Forest. You should check it out.
Anyway, orange is the color of summertime, of fun. Just what we need at this time of year. It is an active color with warm energy. It is an excellent color for a kitchen or dining room since it stimulates appetite and conversation. Just when we needed for a dinner party. Orange invokes balance, memory, sharing, and kindness. Again, just what we needed. And to make it all awesome, orange is awesome on Tuesday and is great for the number 2.
I studded the orange with cloves.
Cloves are awesome. They are a dried flower bud from a tropical evergreen. It stimulates circulation. And is an anesthetic and antibacterial. It is masculine and associated with the fire element. Cloves bring good luck and prosperity, to keep good friends close and to stop malicious gossip.
So to combine the two was awesome and it smelled amazing. I tied them with a fabulous ribbon and wrapped them in sparkly boxes.
And FYI… They keep moths out of the closet.
Blessed Be!

Happy Thanksgiving
Every year at this time we pause to reflect on the things for which we are most thankful. Given the demands of our daily lives, it is easy to get caught up in the tasks of work and home and not take time to appreciate our good fortunes. I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to each and every one of my family, the men, women, and children that make up our everyday lives. Every day of the year, including holidays, both religious and secular, collectively we work to ensure there is food on the tables and love in our hearts.
I am thankful for the privilege to write this for you. It’s an honor to make a positive difference in the lives of others, which is what I hope to do with this and everything I do each day. I thank you for everything you do as well: your commitment, hard work and pursuit of excellence in your own lives each day. I wish you all a happy, healthy, and safe Thanksgiving.
Blessed be.

Book Review: Teen Witch
Teen Witch: Wicca for a New Generation by Silver RavenWolf
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
If you go into this book thinking it is for mature adults, you will be disappointed. This book is clearly written for the 11 to 16 age group, depending on their maturity level. Which is fine, because I didn't buy this book for me. I mean really, at my age I would not buy a book for me titled "Teen Witch". I bought it to share with the younger members of my group. But I decided to read it myself first.
I like this book. It was a good way for a kid to get started without providing them too much at once. Yes, it is a little hokey. Yes, it can be a little patronizing. But you know what, at that age and at that level, that is what you need.
It has a bit of a Christian overtone, but the author clearly wrote it for teens who do not come from Pagan families. It is also a little dated. It was written in 1997. So technology has certainly changed since then. Actually, the whole world has changed since then. The author laments that teens who are interested maybe discriminated against. While that certainly may still be true, I believe that it is way less of a problem than maybe in 1997.
I thought it was a good start. I have not read other books by this author, but now I would like to find out what she writes for adults. Should be interesting reads.

Dam Good
Tonight’s full moon is called the Beaver Moon. Perhaps it was because the Native American’s would set their beaver traps at this time to insure plenty of furs to keep them warm through the winter. Or maybe it was just the activity of the beavers themselves as they built dams to stay safe and warm through the winter. It is also called the Frost Moon, but I think you can figure out why.
Some wiccans also call this the Mourning Moon. As it would be the first full moon of the New Year, it is time to say goodbye to bad habits and toxic relationships, and get a fresh start for the New Year.
It was cold here tonight and the moon looked so huge. There were no clouds and a slight wind. My dearest husband made me a fire in the pit in the back yard. We burned lavender and had communion. It was a short service because we were freezing. The goddess will understand.
On a side note, I cannot wait to have the indoor fireplace fixed so we can have fires inside.

Veteran's Day
Take a moment now to reflect on the achievements and sacrifices of the many brave Americans who have served in our military, both past and present and during both peace and war. Each year we observe Veterans Day in order to honor all the men and women who have served our country in uniform.
In quiet tributes and grand parades, at community centers and war memorials, Americans of all backgrounds come together on this day to celebrate the men and women who have fought to keep our country strong and free. Their efforts laid the foundation for the peace and prosperity that our nation now enjoys. From the oldest veterans, to the men and women currently serving, all Americans who have served in uniform deserve our appreciation and respect on this uniquely special American day.
On this Veteran's Day, let us pause to honor the sacrifice of those who have serviced their country. While we all strive for peace, our Armed Forces help defend against the reality of those who seek to do our country harm. I thank you for your service, and I pray God's blessings to be upon you, your family, and your sacrifice.
Blessed be.
xoxo

Book Review: The Magical Year
The Magical Year by Danu Forest
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I really liked this book. It is definitely very Celtic and if you are not a Celtic pagan you might be put off by the over all Celtic vibe. But if you can get passed it, you can find a ton of useful information in this book.
This book goes over each of the main seasonal celebrations over a Pagan year. Each section gives you a basic over view of the celebration as well as ideas ideas for marking the occasion. Kitchen Witchery is included for each section as well as craft ideas and activities.
I personally used one of the Samhain recipes. I made the stew (with beef) for our Samhain celebration and it came out very good. It claimed to feed 6 and that is about right. Too bad there were 14 of us.
I also have made notes to use several of the ideas for celebrations in the future. I plan on coming back to this book a lot.
Finally, the meditations and visualizations are really great and can be used if you are leading a group. I plan to use them in the future.

A Birthday Spell Of Love
Today is my husband’s birthday. It is also the anniversary of the day we moved in together 11 years ago.
Geez. We are getting old.
Happy Birthday Hot Stuff, may this year bring you nothing but happiness.
And for the occasion, I did a little candle spell.
I used a large candle so that it could burn for him though out the year.
I used a green candle for luck, wealth, wisdom, and abundance.
I used cinnamon and vanilla oils to anoint the candle; Cinnamon to enhance the male libido (That was a little for me.) and vanilla to relieve stress and heightened mental clarity.
I placed the candle on the alter in front of one of my favorite pictures of him with our daughters. I used a green alter cloth. I let it burn for hours.
May each day be better than the last. Let no harm come to anyone. May love always burn in your heart.
Blessed be.

Hail To The Princess
Are you the parent of a small person? Say maybe ages 2 to 8? Okay.
So then you have heard of Princess Elena of Avalor...
For those of you who are not hip on this...
Princess Elena is a Hispanic princess from a cartoon on Disney channel. She is awesome. She even has an abuela who makes tamales.
And I have a 4 year old daughter.
So I am all about Princesses.
So why an I telling you this?
I have a point, I promise.
Today is Dia de los Muertos. The Day of the Dead.
It is a Mexican custom going back to Aztec festivals honoring the dead. It can also be linked to the Catholic observance of All Saints Day. People build alters, sometimes elaborate, to honor their deceased family members. There are all kinds of interesting traditions that go with it, including the decorating of sugar skulls and baking of pan dulce. (A sweet bread or cake) Here in California those things are easy to find as we have a large Hispanic community.
But again, why am I telling you this?
Because Princess Elena's family celebrated Dia de los Muertos.
Therefore, so did my 4 year old.
The idea must not have seemed too far off to her. Make an alter, light some candles, make a cake...
So I say, go ahead.
Behold... Dia de los Muertos alter by one very cute four year old.
The spirit is strong in this little witch.
Blessed be.

The Witching Hour
A Blessed Samhain to all my witches.
Did you just say that SAM HANE? Don’t do it! It is pronounced sah-win, or sow-in or sah-ween.
Hence…
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
I hope you all celebrated and had a great night. I know I did.
But before I regale you with tales of my night, let’s talk about, just what is Samhain?
Is it the night you finally get to ride that broomstick?
Nope.
Are zombies coming?
Only if you are playing Plants vs. Zombies. Then yes, Zombies, they are coming.
Samhain is a cross quarter festival on the Wheel of the Year celebrated by Wiccans and Celtic witches as well as some other neo-pagan groups. And super awesome witches like me. It falls approximately half way between Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice and is the last harvest festival of the year. Some people call it “The Pagan New Year”. Not for me though. New Year’s Day is still January 1. But it does mark the beginning of winter.
So many of our current Halloween traditions come from these long ago pagan Samhain celebrations; from costumes and going door to door for treats to apple bobbing and carving pumpkins. All can be traced back to Samhain. There is so much I could write on the subject.
This is one of the “Spirit Days” when the veil between this world and the other realm is the thinnest; a time when spirits and fairies cross over and visit. This is a time of remembrance. People visit cemeteries and set up ancestral alters leaving favorite items or other offerings to those who have gone ahead. We share stories of them, maybe even set a place for them at dinner.
Most Samhain celebrations include communal bonfires. They serve to bring together the community. Ages ago, our ancestors would put out all the fires in the villages and relight them from the communal fire to bring unity.
This year we carved pumpkins. We set them on the porch to welcome our ancestors home. I made a nice beef stew and butternut squash ravioli. (I got the stew recipe from a pagan book titled “The Magical Year”.) We set up an alter with seasonal fruits and veggies. We added sage and incense and candles. Also added were items special to those we have lost.
One member of our group was the fire tender and started the fire at sunset and kept it going until the sun came back up. We burned sage and cleansed our souls. We wrote down out affirmations for the year and put them in the fire.
It was a great night.
Until we meet again…
Blessed be.

Royal Jewels
Purple has long been considered the color of royalty. For years it was sought out by monarchs to symbolize their wealth and power. Purple symbolizes the soul, the Divine, mystery. It can also be the symbol of serenity and faith. In lighter shades it can bring equilibrium and awakening. It can help to alleviate mental or nervous problems (along with the advice of trained medical professionals) or help in spiritual healing. Too much purple can lead to negative thoughts, tiredness or depression. (If you feel depressed and have suicidal thoughts, contact someone immediately. Suicide Hotline- 1-800-273-8255)
Quartz that has been used for its magick properties since probably its discovery. On a cellular level our bodies and quartz crystal are made of the same minerals. The repeating chemical structure of the atoms that make up crystals are said to invest them with a kind of memory: a power to hold energy. Quartz crystals are naturally receptive to vibrations as they transmit, reflect and store light, and receive energy. The crystal will remember and permeate any environment it is placed.
Amethyst is purple quartz, from the Greek word Amethysos, which means “not intoxicated. So the Greek story goes…
The Wine God Baccus was very angry over being insulted by the Goddess Artemis (Roman Diana), the Goddess of the Hunt. So he vowed vengeance on the next mortal he sees. And for vengeance he plans to have two very large, ferocious tigers devour said mortal. The very next person he sees is the maiden Amethyst who is on her way to worship at the shrine of Artemis. When the tigers sprung out at her she called to Artemis for help. Artemis turned her into white crystal so she would be protected from the tigers and preserve her beauty. Baccus, who the felt guilty over his actions, poured his wine over the crystals as an offering, turning them forever purple. This stone is often associated with Artemis or Diana. The ancient Greeks believed that amethyst prevented drunkenness and they decorated drinking cups with them.
Amethyst was added to ancient European helmets in order to keep a cool head in battle. They believed it would bring good fortune in war or on the hunt. It is said to drive out evil spirits and inspire intellect. It was used to protect crops from locusts and as protection from snakebites as well as cures for stomach aches, insect bites and to beautify skin. It is even said that eagles, the birds of gods, used amethyst in its nest to protect its young from harm. Ancient Egyptians used it as protection during travels.
Amethyst is considered the stone of St. Valentine and a symbol of faithful love. (My engagement ring has an amethyst stone in it.) It is the Gem of Fire, once more valuable than diamonds. It spews with the energy of fire, passion, creativity and spirituality, but with the logic of temperance and sobriety. It has a sobering and cleansing effect and can aid with loss and grief. It is also the common birthstone associated with February.
It is the Stone of Friendship, a symbol of trust and piety. It is thought to put the wearer in a chaste state of mind. The Catholic Church calls it the “Bishop’s Stone” and it is worn by Bishops and Cardinals going back centuries to keep their minds pure and protect them from evil. Buddhists use it for prayer beads (Mala). Catholics have made Rosaries from it. Moses described amethyst as a symbol of the Spirit of God. It is found on the breastplates he was instructed by God to have made, the third stone in the third row. (Exodus 39:12) It is also used in the Bible as the 12th stone set into the foundations of New Jerusalem. (Revelation 21:20) The Russian Empress Catherine the Great loved it so much that she sent thousands of miners in search of it.
A new moon is upon us tonight, the night before Samhain. It’s a witchy night.
And why, you might ask, have I just filled your brain with all of this wonderful information about amethyst?
Because it called to me.
I have been learning to read runes. I have always been more of a tarot card kind of witch, but runes are smaller and there are less of them. I was introduced to them this summer and have been studying them since. I finally decided I was in need of my own set. And when presented with options, amethyst runes said “Pick Me!”
And I did.
And since they were not always mine, tonight, under a new moon, I said a prayer and lit a candle over them. I feel they will need to sit there until the full moon comes. Then they will be mine to use in divination.
For blessed are those who never stop learning.

Dallas
Yesterday, a very angry man ambushed and fired upon a group of police officers in Dallas, Texas, killing five officers, three of which were veterans, and injuring nine others. Two civilians were also wounded. The shooting was the deadliest incident for U.S. law enforcement since the September 11 attacks. This angry man was also a veteran, who was reportedly angry over police shootings of black men and stated that he wanted to kill white people, especially white police officers. What is really most important to know is that five families will never be the same. Yesterday morning those 5 people got up and went to work as usual. Today those same five families will not have their loved one coming home. We offer prayers to these families and to all those who were affected by the senseless violence against these police officers. We pray for strength as we continue to find out details as to why this has happened. And we pray that it does not happen again.
Following the shooting, this same very angry man fled inside a building on the campus of a local college. Police followed him there, and a standoff ensued. Early this morning, he lost his life in the battle with the police. We offer those same prayers to his family, as they too will not have their loved one home tonight. We pray that they find strength to get through this tremendous tragedy.
It is in times like this, people from all of our diverse American backgrounds need to come together and unite as one to lift the spirits of those who were impacted by these actions. We must pray that our country is stronger than just one angry individual. I pray for our country now. I pray for peace.
Blessed Be.

Orlando
Please join me in keeping all those affected by the mass shooting tragedy in Orlando in your thoughts and prayers. More than 50 individuals lost their lives and more than 50 were injured. Now more than ever, we need to stand together in solidarity to honor those that have lost their lives due to a senseless act of violence. We need to come together and through kindness and empathy, bring the community together. This is a time for community to stand against hate and conquer it with love.
May justice and mercy be both experienced and honored as investigations continue and loved ones mourn. Given all those killed and injured, it is very possible that someone you know may be affected by this tragedy. We lift up special prayers for those offering care and ministry in the Orlando area, especially to the LGBT community of Florida.
We offer prayers of thanks to those first responders who run toward what others run from. May they be watched over and blessed. Please remember, they too are humans and will require support during this difficult time.
Let us be present and available to stand with community members who are experiencing grief and shock from these hateful and terrorist acts. May we all seek to be further beacons of light, love, care, and justice in our lives and in the world. For light, community, and love continues to cast out all fear.
Peace and Blessings...

On A Shopping Spree
A Flower Moon... a good time to get out in the garden. Grow some herbs. Do some magic. That is what I am going to do. I have some great spells in mind.
How about you?
So...
Ever need a witchy item and be all like…
“Where does one even get one of those?”
Well, Amazon has a ton of options you can order right from home. I have ordered candles, a candle snuffer, a tiny cauldron, some charms and various books right off Amazon. Even better, you can buy used books for cheap. I got a couple for a penny plus shipping.
But if you are looking for something a little more specialized, I use Azure Green.
Check out their website.
They have a ton of great stuff. Their staff is awesome and the items ship quickly. I have purchased several candle holders, a bunch of great incense, some charms and a little bell. They have a great selection of runes and tarot cards. There are so many wonderful little boxes and a wide array of alter cloth. I could spend hours on the website just shopping.
Not only do they offer a ton of stuff for Wiccan practices, they also offer items for Asatru/Odinist Pagans, Buddhists, Hindu, and even Santeria.
Now I just want to buy stuff. Look what you made me do. So when this little jewelry box arrives, I am telling my husband it is your fault.
Blessed be.

The Eye of Jasper
A new moon is here. And it was a pretty awesome day. I did have to work, but it wasn’t so bad.
Recently I got a new necklace made of beads of green jasper. I really like it and have been wearing it a lot. If you don’t want to put yourself out there by wearing a pentagram around your neck, you can wear something simple as a beaded necklace. (Or you can wear it under your clothing as it is better closer to your person. I wear mine where ever. I have several with pentagrams and moons and goddesses.)
Green Jasper is a very nice earth stone. Green is the rarest form of jasper. More common colors include red, yellow, brown and grey.
Green jasper is the ultimate and most reliable stone for rain bringing. I live in the desert so I can always use that. Besides, I love the sound of rain. I use a rain sounds soundtrack when I meditate, study or to help me sleep.
It is also a sleep stone. It can be a talisman for those coping with paranoia or who are overwhelmed by nightmares. It can ward off negative energies, bring reassurances and restore inner calm. (Although if you are having problems sleeping or are coping with paranoia, please see a qualified health professional.)
Jasper can drive away evil spirits, ghosts, harmful fantasies and evil witchcraft. (Although, no witchcraft should be evil.) It can be protective against venomous creatures or protect you from drowning. (So does common sense. Stay away from venomous creatures and large bodies of water if you do not know how to swim.)
Jasper can provide good health; make one amiable and brave, and even ward off sorrow. It is said to heal fever and edema, as well as diseases of the stomach, lungs and chest. It can increase fertility and aid women through pregnancy and childbirth. (Again, with the aid of a qualified medical professional.)
Jasper can balance obsessive tendencies and restore harmony to the emotional body. Because of those qualities it is used to aid with addictions, such as smoking or alcoholism. (Again, seek a qualified medical professional if you are seeking help.)
Green jasper is associated with Persephone, Greek Goddess of Spring and Re-Birth; Gaia, the Greek Earth Mother Goddess; Bona Dea, the Roman Goddess of Earth and Fertility; Callisto, the Greek Moon Goddess, Chirakan-Ixmucane, the Mayan Creator Goddess; and Clota, Goddess of the River Clyde.
With all of those amazing qualities, it is no wonder I enjoy wearing it so much. I hope you to have found something that is special to you.
Blessed be.

Passover
Today is the first day of Passover, a Jewish religious celebration of the book of Exodus. In the Hebrew book of Exodus, the Jewish were slaves to an Egyptian Pharaoh. Led by Moses, the Jewish attempted to gain freedom, with an assist from God. God unleashed 10 horrible plagues upon the Pharaoh, persuading him to let the Jewish people go.
First, God changed the water of the Nile to blood. So the Egyptians would have no water. But it didn’t bother the Jews.
Next, God sent frogs. That again, left the Jews alone.
Third, it was lice. But not on Jews.
Fourth, it was a swarm of flies or wild animals. But the Jewish farms remained untouched.
Next, God sent diseased livestock to the Egyptians only.
For the next bit of persuasion, God sent boils. Ow.
Then it was a thunder storm or hail and fire which somehow missed all the Jewish people.
For the eighth plague, God sent locusts.
And for the ninth, God made it night for three whole days.
Now, let me just say, these Egyptians were a stubborn bunch. I would have given up already. But the Egyptians, who worshiped a nature based pantheon of gods, were sure that their gods could kick the Jewish God’s butt. In Islam, The Qur’an, which tells a very similar story of Moses, says that despite all of these, the Egyptians “were seeped in arrogance, a people given to sin.” (The Holy Qur’an- Surah 7: Al A’raf Section 16, Verses 132 through 136.)
So for the 10th and final plague, God decided to kill all the first born sons. The Jewish were instructed to put the blood of a slaughtered lamb over their door so that God would know not to kill those first born.
And so we have Passover. As in, God passed over the Jewish homes when He was on a killing rampage.
The Pharaoh decided that killing people was too far and told Moses to take his people and go. Then he changed his mind later, but that is a different story.
And so the Jewish were freed.
Except…
People of that area were celebrating a Spring Festival long before the Exodus, which would have been roughly 1300 BCE. Complete with lambs blood on the door to ward off evil spirits, as soon as the barley was ripe.
And who says the Jewish God was more powerful that the Egyptian pantheon? Perhaps the Pharaoh was being a jerk, which he clearly was, and Ra, the sun god, was not happy with the way this Pharaoh was treating people and let these things happen to teach him a lesson. Maybe they were working together.
We are all at the will of the Gods and Goddesses. Only by respecting them, shall they respect us. Lesson learned. Thank you, Moses. You have shown us that those who serve the Gods are helped by them. And thank you Pharaoh, for this lesson in how not to act. Be kind to all who walk the path of the Spirit. While their path may not be yours, it is also not your path to judge.
Happy Passover to all of my Jewish friends.
Blessed be.

The Winds Of Change
A blessed full moon to all of my witches this evening. It is beautiful out there. This moon goes by a lot of names. Wind Moon, Seed moon, Pink Moon…
Wind Moon because of the winds outside; the change of seasons and the change of times.
Seed Moon because now is a good time to plant seeds.
Pink Moon because now is the time of Pink moss, or wild ground phlox, one of the first Spring Flowers.
I like Pink Moon because I like pink. And while the moon is not actually pink, I still like the idea.
Today is Earth Day, and so, for today, we are discussing the element of Earth. Everything starts with it. Earth is one of the five elements invoked during ritual to balance the energies of either the sacred space or the individual or both. (With the other four elements being wind, fire, water and Spirit.)
The Earth is stable. It is the foundation of all. It is feminine, Mother Earth, giver of life. It is the North, the top, the beginning. It has a grounding affect. Earth is used in stone, crystal, and knot magick as well as garden magick and runes. It is often used in spells relating to hearth and home as well as the gaining of material things including money, employment, general security and family matters. It is useful in spells related to health, fertility and prosperity. It is a winter and night element and can be represented by drums.
Earth is represented in many ways. On an altar, it can be represented by stone or crystals, specifically onyx, jade, halite, amethyst, and fluorite. It can be represented by salt or a bowl of soil. It is represented by the colors brown, black, green, and yellow. It is represented by plants, particularly grains, ivy, red poppy, mushrooms and potatoes. Bulls, stags, dragons, wolves, owls, cats and Sphinx are animal representative of Earth. Gnomes, fauns, goblins, satyrs, dryads, sylvesters, dwarves and trolls are all mythical beings of the Earth element.
The goddesses Demeter, Ceres and Persephone are strong in the Earth element as are the Horae and Prosperpina. The gods Hades and Pluto are also gods of Earth. The Horned God is also a representative of the Earth element.
Earth is felt strongly in caves, forests, valleys and fields. It is in the practical areas of your home; the bathroom, the kitchen, the dining room.
People with earth based personalities like to work with their hands. They are also very family-oriented. On the other hand, too much can cause inability to dare or branch out in any way.
Earth is the first and last. The giver of life. And where we return at the end.
On my alter I generally use a bamboo bowl of salt as well as a rock I got from Yosemite on a trip there and a pine cone my daughter collected in Big Bear.
What do you use? What represents Earth to you?
Blessed be!

What's That Smell?
It's a fabulous new moon tonight. Who is ready for a great new month? I know I am.
Lavender is my favorite incense. The calming effect is amazing. It’s also a great herb to grow in the garden. I grow it in my garden. Lavender is a member of the mint family. I actually grow it next to mint. It smells really good.
Lavender is an antiseptic and it is anti-inflammatory. Use it with chamomile to help you sleep.
Lavender is relaxing and uplifting. It sharpens minds and encourages and strengthens true love. It can also encourage fertility.
Lavender is associated with the element of air. It is masculine in action. It is also associated with the zodiac sign Virgo and the planet Mercury.
And if you are looking for something to deter moths and fleas, look no further.
Like I said, it is my favorite. I light it so often it really is my signature scent. My house always smells like lavender.
It is also a really great color.
Purples, like lavender, can speak to the soul, invoke the divine and create mystery. They bring about serenity and faith. Lighter shades can bring equilibrium and awakening. It is great for spiritual healing.
Combine the color with the scent to relieve stress and anxiety.
Relax.
Blessed be.

For The Jesters
Happy April Fool’s Day!
Today is the official day of hoaxes, pranks, and jokes.
This is not really a holiday. Not really…
The first recorded mention of anything April Fool related was in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales from 1392. On April 1, the proud rooster is tricked by the sly fox however he escapes when the fox attempts to chide his pursuers and accidentally let go of the rooster.
Whatever it is, you go out and enjoy it. No reason for witches not to have a little fun.
Here are a few to get you started…

Sort Of, But Not Really
It’s Easter Sunday.
No, wait it isn’t really. We did that already.
However, for all of my Christian and Catholic friends, it is Resurrection Sunday.
And they still call it Easter. The Easter Bunny still comes. He leaves eggs at church.
A PAGAN SYMBOL IN A CHURCH! EGADS!
But there it is. What can you say? It’s a tradition.
So to all of you fabulous people celebrating Easter today, Happy Easter.
Truthfully, as it is an American Holiday, the Easter bunny came by here too. My little one put on her fancy new Easter dress and hunted for eggs in the yard. I made a ham. It was delicious.
When I was little, my grandpa used to take me to church on Easter. I got to wear a fancy dress and sing songs and get candy. It was awesome. I felt all grown up going to church with grandpa.
Anyway, to all of you out there celebrating, whatever you are celebrating, have a great day!

One Night With The King
Today my Jewish friends celebrate Purim. Of all the Jewish holidays, this is one of my favorite stories.
It all starts with Esther; a lovely young Jewish girl living in Persia with her dear cousin. She ends up taken in by the King Of Persia as part of his haram. And she is such a hottie he makes her the Queen. Of course, he does not know that she is Jewish.
The King has this right hand man called Haman. He is not a nice fellow. One day he meets Esther’s cousin and Ester’s cousin refuses to bow down to him. Maybe because Haman was such a jackass. Yeah, that was probably it.
Anyways…
Haman gets all in his feelings and decided to exterminate the Jews. Total Nazi. And he feeds the King a line so the King goes for it.
Well Esther, being a Jew, can’t have that. All her people don’t need to die. Not for that jerk Haman.
So she has a plan. She will go see the King and she will convince him to stop this. But you can’t just go see the King uninvited. That is a good way to lose your head, even if you are the Queen.
So she prays and fasts for three days. So did every other Jew. Then she went to see the king.
And the king is delighted to see her. From what I understand, she was probably made up like a little lady treat. And the king decided to indulge. And whatever happened after that must have been something because the King offered Esther anything her little heart desired. And what did Esther want? To save her people. And have Haman hanged from the very gallows he built to hang the Jews. And for good measure they hanged his kids too.
And so the Jewish celebrate their triumph over evil.
And to celebrate, they generally fast the day before Purim and the day of they are commanded to “eat, drink and be merry.” They have feasts and give food to others. They give to charity. They read the story of Esther aloud and boo and hiss when Haman is mentioned. They eat cookies called Hamantashen witch are triangular and fruit filled.
Sounds like a fun time.
(FYI… the story of Esther is in the bible as well, but I am pretty sure she keeps all her clothes on.)
And why should witches care?
Because those who are accepting of others will be accepted themselves. Karma. What you give, you get returned to you threefold. Remember that.
Blessed Be.

In Like A Lion
The old saying goes March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb. That is why March’s full moon is called the Storm Moon. Native American’s call it the Worm Moon, as now is the time when the ground softens, the earth worms come out, and the robins return.
Of course, if you live in the desert like I do, rain may seem like a far-fetched dream. Perhaps a nice rain talisman would help…
So…
Let’s talk about aquamarine.
Aquamarine is a light blue stone, also called blue beryl. And it was once used as a stone to bring rain. It is a water element stone also used for protection for those who travel by, over or near waters. Its name is Latin meaning “Water of the Sea”. Aquamarine evokes water, the ocean and calm seas. It brings luck to sailors and is considered treasure of mermaids.
Aquamarine is the color of heaven reflected in the ocean going on for infinity. It is the pale blue of the winter sky as it gives way to spring. It is calming, soothing and cleansing. It inspires truth, trust and letting go. It is a stone of eternal youth and happiness. It can cultivate inner tranquility, cleanse the emotional body and open channels of clear and heartfelt communications. It is also a mediation aid.
It is a cooling stone. It is the stone of breath and balance. It is a stone of empowerment showing that not all power comes from force. Ancient Romans believed it would render a soldier invincible and that it was an antidote for poison. They also believed that if a figure of a frog were carved into or out of aquamarine that it would serve to make enemies into friends.
Aquamarine is the stone of Kuan-Yin, the Chinese Goddess of Mercy, Compassion and Unconditional Love. It is also the stone of Akna, the Mayan Goddess of Motherhood, as well as Kupala, the Slavonic Water Goddess.
It is the Zodiac stone of Scorpio. It is associated with the Tarot Symbol- the Hanging Man. It is a traditional gift for a 19th wedding anniversary and is said to reawaken love in married couples.
But most common of all, it is the birth stone for the month of March.
And as today is my birthday, it is my birthstone.
